Care Center, Discipleship, Generosity Finding Hope in the Storm

By Kaylah Bolender

In 2023, the Mobile Pantry traveled to Sullivan, Indiana on two separate occasions to help a community rocked by storms and tornadoes. What happened next was a powerful reminder of the unexpected ways we can make a difference when we step out in faith.

When the team arrived at Sullivan First Christian Church, they got a request: a woman in a wheelchair needed help first. As they chatted during the intake process, it became clear that this was more than just a routine pantry visit.

Turns out, the storms in March had taken everything from her – her home and, devastatingly, her husband. Imagine the heartbreak of being trapped under your own house while first responders unknowingly found someone else. It took a whole day before they discovered her. Now, she's in a wheelchair, spending 90 days in the hospital and facing a reality she never expected.

When the Mobile Pantry team asked about her family size, she couldn't hold back the tears. The storms had left her not just physically broken but emotionally shattered, too.

But here's where the story takes a turn. The Mobile Pantry, along with the volunteers from Grace, didn't just drop off groceries. They became a lifeline of support, care, and prayer for this woman who had been through so much. In the midst of her pain, they brought a glimmer of hope, showing her that she wasn't alone.

It was a humbling experience for the team, but they believed they were there for a reason. Amid the wreckage, they became a beacon of light, proving that sometimes, in the most unexpected places, you find not just help, but hope.

The Mobile Pantry is able to respond to urgent crises like this, because of funds donated by our community. If you’d like to be a part of the impact the Mobile Pantry makes, you can donate today at gracechurch.us/allin.
