Message Transcript

You guys know the story so I’m going to skip around

John 11:1–15 NLT

1 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”

4 But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days. 7 Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”

8 But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”

9 Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” 11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”

12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.

14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”

John 11:21 NLT

21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.

Umm, why is Lazarus Dead

This is what the disciples had to be thinking,

I’ve seen Jesus heal too many folks

 THIS DON’T MAKE ANY SENSE

I know - you’re uncomfortable

But can you imagine the questions going through the disciples heads

Can you imagine Mary and Martha

Maybe you can Imagine because you’ve felt the same way

Have you every felt like God was ignoring you’

When you did everything right’

Mary and Martha did what they were supposed to do

They called the healer and LAZARUS STILL DIED

THIS MAKES NO SENSE

And sometimes things in our lives make no sense

I wanna talk about

Making Sense Out Of Nonsense

the first thing we gotta do is

Admit that it doesn’t make sense

I know this story

I know the ending

but we often miss the message rushing to the puchline

We crave happy endings

That’s why every is depressed broke down sad but if you ask them

oh I’m blessed

Nah life is hard

and sometimes we miss the blessing because we try to smooth things over

we try to smooth things over because we want the easy answer

Look at the way the disciples try to come up with an easy answer

John 11:11–15 NLT

11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”

But sometimes

There is no easy answer

God isn’t trying to make your life easy he’s trying to make you more like Jesus

So what will your response be?

we ought to be more like Thomas

John 11:16 NLT

16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.”

We have done Thomas such an injujstice

We’ve called him doubting Thomas and forgot everything he did in John 11 .

Thomas says if this is the plan

this is the plan

this is what we signed up for

But how could he said that

How can you just go in the midst of nonsense?

You gotta Remember God’s character

John 11:5–6 NLT

5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days.

John is careful to remind us That Jesus loved them

God is not mad at you

God is not trying to hurt you

Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Not only does God know the plans but God know you’re hurting

John 11:35 NLT

35 Then Jesus wept.

Jesus isn’t sad

Jesus knows that Lazarus is about to get up

Jesus is empathetic

Just because you don’t know what God’s doing doesn’t mean God doesn’t know how you feel

In the text Jesus is making a point

John 11:21–26 NLT

21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”

25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

Jesus says that point is I AM RESURRECTION

(JESUS IS RESURRECTION)

• I’m the call when hope is lost

• when there’s no other option

• Cause they’re going to kill me

• and lie and say that I didnt get up out the grave

• CRUCIFIXTION IS AN ACT OF TERROISM DESIGNED TO DESTROY HOPE

• THEY WERE ALREADY CONDITIONED THIS WAY

•

• SO YEA HE WAITED TILL THE JEWS BELIEVE THE SPIRIT WAS NO LONGER HOVERING OVER THE BODY

• YEA HE LET RIGOR MOTIS SET

• JESUS IS PROVING HE HAS THE POWER EVEN OVER THE NONSENSE
